Let’s Thrive!

THRIVE – What does it mean?

Apparently this is a popular word in our present society with corporations ranging from an organic food resource to an inspirational web site to weight loss helps and more.  Several companies have used this word in their business name to promote the connotation of success. Let’s take a look at a dictionary interpretation of this commonly used word.

Thriveto prosper; be fortunate or successful; to grow or develop vigorously, flourish.

Okay, so it is a good, positive word!  This could apply to plants, animals or people.  Have you ever heard someone refer to their flowers as thriving (gorgeous pink hydrangeas) – or the corn in the field (knee high by the 4th of July) – or even a tiny baby showing rapid growth and a healthy flush on its cheeks?  This same word, thrive, can be used properly in each situation.

What about thriving spiritually?

Take a look at the Bible for reinforcement of some of the above meanings.

Prosper – Deuteronomy 29:9 – Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do.

I Chronicles 22:11 – Now, my son, the Lord be with thee; and prosper thou, and build the house of the Lord thy God, as he hath said of thee.

Success – Joshua 1:8 – This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein:  for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

With just these three scriptures it becomes apparent in the steps to thriving spiritually that one must be obedient to God’s covenants by observing what He says in His Word.  He also commands us to ‘build the house of the Lord’.

You mean it is that easy?

That’s what God said!  By obeying His laws and doing our part to build up the house of God (which temple we are), we can thrive.  We can flourish!  We can be a success!  Understandably, this all begins with commitment  - to God, to others and to ourselves.  I don’t think I would be amiss to assume that everyone wants to be successful, and fortunately it is not beyond our reach.
