The Joy of the Lord

Joy is described by Dictionary.com as an emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying.  A marriage, the birth of a child, life celebrations are all cause for joy.  Everyone loves to experience this wonderful sensation and many are on a constant search to achieve the state of joy.

What does the Bible say about joy?  The word joy appears in 155 verses in the King James’ Version.  During times of sorrow, God’s Word offers hope of joy in Psalm 30:5 where it declares, “weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”  The Psalmist in chapter 51:12 informs us that sometimes joy is lost when he appealed, “Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.”

If you are lacking joy in your life, the scripture is explicit as to where it can be found.  I love the declaration in Psalm 16:11, “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. “  Simply in His presence, it can be found.  Haven’t you experienced times in your life that you felt so discouraged, and yet, just a few moments in the House of God brought peace and joy to your soul?

Most frequently we consider joy to be a noun, but it can also be a verb.  Habakkuk 3:18 states, “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.  This indicates that we also must put forth an effort to participate in joy.  Again, action is required when in the book of Luke we are instructed to ‘leap for joy’.

Galations 5:22 informs us that joy is a fruit of the spirit.  Let’s all strive to bear this precious fruit
in our lives to make us effective servants of the King!

Be joyful!
