Making and Keeping a New Year’s Resolution

Are you one of those people who make a long list of resolutions each year and one by one break them before the month of January is over? Here are some ways to be more effective in keeping your resolutions.
     1. Have only one major resolution at a time.

It is too hard to make a lot of changes at once, so apply yourself to making only one important change. Several smaller achievements may be accomplished at the same time, but don’t burden yourself with too many issues at once.

     2. Break down your goal into manageable increments.

Set goals for each week and then for each month. If it is weight loss you are trying to achieve, this will be much more successful. If it is a more dedicated daily prayer life and devotions, begin with one day at a time. Perhaps it is time management that needs improving. Start with a daily schedule, and it will flow easier into weeks and months. It can seem overwhelming to have large goals that look unattainable.

     3. Visualize the desired results.

This can be applied to physical or spiritual goals and will help you to keep a positive approach for the changes needed to be made. Visualization can be the motivation that keeps you on track. A smaller physique; a spiritual giant? You can do it!

     4. Voice your vision.

This is the time to find a confidante and share your dreams. By vocalizing your inward thoughts you will be more apt to keep working toward the goal. A close friend will be delighted to encourage your efforts.

     5. Don’t let a setback become failure.

One setback doesn’t mean that you have to quit. Discouragement comes from defeat, but it is not necessary to stay down. Get back up and start anew toward your goals.

     6. Pat yourself on the back occasionally.

Frequently we are very hard on ourselves and become our own biggest critic. Look for even the smallest of achievements and give yourself the credit! Maybe even a reward!

The very best to each of you as you attempt to better yourself in the coming year. You can do it!
