A Heart to Serve

Looking at the Scripture, we discover tremendous examples of people that were mightily used of God because they had a heart to serve.

We find in David, the King handpicked by God, a leader that the Bible says was a man “after God’s own heart.” His life was a strange blend of good and evil. It was filled with great conquests and acts; while at the same time being marked with grave mistakes. No Bible character more fully illustrates the moral range of human nature, yet he’s known as “a man after God’s own heart.”

In the moment leading up to what is likely one of David’s most defining moments, slaying the Giant, he is found simply delivering lunch. David, just performing an everyday task, is walking into one of his greatest moments.

Rebekah, out doing her daily tasks, is about to walk into her miracle. She encounters Abraham’s servant at the well and offers water to the servant’s camels. Offering the servant a drink would have been polite enough, but, Rebekah offers water to the servant’s camels. A camel can drink up to 30 gallons of water in under 15 minutes. Offering water to his camels was no small task. Little did Rebekah realize that her simple act of service would impact the outcome of her life so drastically.

We cannot talk about having a heart to serve without looking at the life of Jesus Christ. Mark 10:45 in the NIV says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Hours before His own death, Jesus washes His disciples’ feet. He takes upon Himself to perform the duty of a household servant, knowing full well that amongst the recipients of this act of service is the betrayer. Leading up to the moment that would define eternity, Jesus picks up a towel and serves His disciples.

God is looking for people with a heart to serve. He doesn’t need our ability – He is looking for availability.  We must be willing to serve. Someone who will say, God, I may not possess the talent or the ability, however I’ve made myself a vessel for you to use any way you can.
