The Blessing of Having a Sister |

“We’re going to have a baby”! I heard those words from my parents when I was eight years old. I had always been the baby. A baby? Oh! I was so excited! I wanted a baby brother because I already had a sister. She was older than me and oh so beautiful. We had a brother too, so we needed one more boy to even things out. So, in my childhood mind it was a brother we needed. But God saw it differently and sent us another sister. What’s it like being the middle sister? I am blessed beyond measure! Sisters are best friends! My older sister is 5 years older than me and my younger sister is 9 years younger. Of course, as kids that seemed like a huge gap, but as the years have gone by, we have become very close and the years don’t matter at all. We lost our older brother in 2000, and then our mother passed just 13 months later. During this time we leaned heavily on each other for strength and encouragement. A few years later we lost our dad. So, it quickly became just the 3 of us. We hold all the memories of our family. We love to tell them all. We have the fun/funny memories and the more serious ones too, but we re-tell them all to simply keep the rest of our family alive. Here is one I’ll share with you. Many years ago our Dad made a promise to us that he would meet us in front of the throne after the rapture took place. He said, “When we get to heaven there is going to be millions of people so as soon as you can, make your way to the front of the throne and let’s all meet there.” My sisters and I remind each other of this a lot and we remind our families too. We have a promise to keep! We are going to meet Mother, Daddy, our brother and a host of saints and other family members around the throne. Don’t let ANYTHING keep you out of heaven! To me this is the greatest blessing of having sisters that love God and serve Him with their whole heart. Another blessing of having sisters is the simple fact that no one else knows you better. You can be who you are with no airs, no pretense, nothing but you when you are with your sisters. My sisters love to laugh too. There is always, ALWAYS a time when we are together that something funny will happen or one of us will say something and we end up in fits of laughter. I’m thankful for this blessing! It does my heart good like a medicine. Sisters are always there! I know God is always with us and He never leaves us, but there are those times when you need someone with skin on to give you a hug or a “it’s going to be okay”. Sisters are this kind of blessing! They are just there. You see, God knew all those years ago exactly what our family needed when he gave us another sister. He knew that down through time I would not only need the wisdom and constant of an older sister, but I’d also need the fun loving younger sister that would bring so many smiles along the way. Sisters are definitely a blessing from God! |
