Check My Heart

Recently I received an email notice that it was time for me to see my cardiologist – an important reminder in case it might have slipped my mind. Heart complications can often be corrected by early detection.   Cholesterol buildup, arrhythmia and valve issues can often be repaired through prompt and consistent care.

In the King James Version of the Bible the word ‘heart’ is mentioned 830 times.  Various adjectives are added which include:  clean, pure, meek, lowly, evil, true – a wide variety of definitions.  The heart refers to our center for both physical, moral and emotional activities; the central organ that moves the rest of the body.

A favorite scripture of mine and commonly referenced is Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” It has become a frequent prayer of mine as the heart is so easily deceived.  It requires a daily renewal and refreshing to keep our hearts in a healthy condition.  If God can take a heart of stone and make it a heart of flesh, he can easily transform or repair an unclean or a broken heart.

As a cardiologist watches over the condition of my physical heart, so does God view my spiritual heart.  It is imperative that we take heed to the warning signs of an unclean heart.  As the arteries can become blocked with plaque, so can our spiritual heart become clogged with bad attitudes, critical spirits, lethargy and distress.  It is absolutely vital that we seek God’s divine intervention with giving us a clean heart.  Heart disease is the leading cause of death – physically and spiritually.

Please, God, check my heart!
