Not As Planned

Sitting in the surgical waiting room with my family a few weeks ago during what should have been a routine heart ablation for my husband, I began to feel a little concern as the hours passed by.  Having been told that the procedure could possibly be finished in an hour and a half to two hours, I became uneasy after five hours had passed and no updates had been given to us.  Not to belabor the medical details, we found out after six hours that the surgery did not go as planned, and there were serious complications.

Have you ever found this to be the case in your life?  I’m sure we have all experienced these sudden changes of plans whether the loss of employment, the residential mortgage denial, or the unexpected illness of a loved one.  Sometimes these detours in our journey are not welcomed at all and cause us to feel dismay and disappointment.  Carefully laid plans are thrown askew as we suddenly are required to walk a different path.

This is the time that it is crucial to place our trust and confidence in the Lord who has all control. Two of my favorite scriptures that teach trust are found in Proverbs 3:5,6.  “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”  This is a powerful scripture with a command and a promise.

So when things don’t go as planned, still I will trust.  Occasionally the new path brings fear upon me, and I quickly remind myself of Psalm 56:3, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”  Even though my new route may be unplanned and undesired, I want Him to direct my path.

Not as planned?  Trust Him!   As Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir sings so beautifully, “While the storm rages on, and I can’t find my way, still I will trust you, Lord.”

Give it all to Jesus right now and – Lighten Up!
